Default Floating lantern ceremony in Hilo, Hawaii

This series of photos was taken a few days ago in Hilo, Hawaii. It shows a brief sequence from the floating lantern ceremony in Hilo. The ceremony is an ancient Japanese ritual that honors the souls of the dead through the use of candle lit lanterns floated down a river to the open ocean. Buddhist prayers are offered up during the ceremony as the lanterns are launched.
As a modification of the original ceremony to insure that the lanterns reach the open ocean, they were placed on a raft and ferried out by kayakers to the mouth of the river where they were released into the ocean. The lanterns represent the souls of the departed.
