Default Chess players need help

The following shot of two chess players showing their skills at night in Waikiki, Honolulu was taken originally in color as shown below. The original was taken without flash with ambient light. This ambient light is a mixture of flourescent and tungsten which makes it a bit difficult to adjust for the reddish tinge. I converted it to black and white to see the result.

First, which looks better and what hints to make the color picture "better".

and the black and white

I gotta go with the original color pic. PS some of that red out and I think you have a pretty nice picture. White is making a play, but you can't see his hand in the B/W pic whereas the movement is apparent in the color one.

Slipe,

Thanks for the edits. It does look quite a bit better. Did you do some sharpening?

Lauren, I did try losin some of the red but then it got a pale "death like" overcast.

I took the picture without flash to avoid disturbing the participants. They were playing a timed game and they execute moves within seconds.
