I like both shots, but agree with those who suggest a tighter crop. The main impact of these images is to make me wish I was forty years younger...

What lens and camera are you using? I'm really not sure about the focus, although they do look a bit soft.

Large Typo – Basically I am a non speller so I edit everything in a Word run the spell check / grammar and then paste it into the thread editor. I guess I am not getting the text size correct.

Here are the 100% crops of the two images as they came off the camera (no editing other than the crop).

The lens I used was my 70-200 f2.8. The other options would have been 50mm f1.8, 17mm – 85m USM IS f4 – 5.6 or 70-300 f4 – 5.6 USM IS. I was not going to get my daughter out for a long photo shoot so I pick the lens that I have used the most. I also want the 2.8 for the DOF (they were shot at f3.2). I did use my speedlight for #1 but the shots did not look as good on the back of the camera.

The more I learn about photography, the more I realize how little I know.

I also ran a focus test on my camera / lens at 70mm 2.8 and 200mm 2.8. The images were taken with a tripod and 2 second timer. I bounced a flash off the ceiling for a little better light. I included a 100% crop and a resize of the full image. Again no editing other than resized and cropped.

Are these good or should it be better?

Could it be the camera body? The focus problem does not seem to be limited to just this lens.

I still am not sure that it is equipment. Here is one more 100% crop. Focus is on the 10.

Does your lens have IS? Otherwise handholding a 70-200 2.8 at 1/60 requires very good technique. The crops of the two photos again lead me to think you've got camera shake going on here.

No IS on the 70-200 2.8. So it could be technique. But there are plenty that I have shot at high shutter speeds that seem a bit marginal. Also have shots from the tripod with marginal results. Some shot come out very sharp, but that seems to be the exception.

Here is another 100% crop. This was shot at 1/2000 sec. focus set to AL servo. Should this be sharper? This is my first dslr so I really don’t know what my expectations should be.
