Default Hawaiian Pa'u Riders

In early Hawaii, Hawaiian women straddled their horse rather than the traditional sidesaddle western style at the time. This was easily accomplished because the women wore long flowing riding skirts called Pa'u. This practice is honored today in the many local celebrations involving parades. Women called Pa'u riders in their long flowing skirts and beautiful flower leis are an integral part of the celebration. Each island is assigned a different flower and the horses are also adorned in a matching flower lei.

Here are a couple of the Pa'u riders of Hawaii.

I enjoyed the pics. I like the colors. I also like the leis. I have not seen authentic leis -- so elaborate -- only the cheap copies we had when we called them garlands in elementary school.

Come to think of it, I have friends in or who've been to Hawaii but never showed me "everyday" street pictures of it. Only volcanoes and other popular tourist attractions. Thanks for giving me an intimate peek. I wish I could see more.
