Got an email asking if that was really his eye color or if I did something. The answer is yes and no. Yes, he has beautiful blue eyes, but I did have the color up a notch on the camera. I did the auto levels and auto color and sized it. That was it for processing. His eyes tend to be more grey blue than the ice blue it looks like in the pictures.

Thanks for the email too!

That is a beautiful boy you have there!
Although the colour of his eyes is very stunning, it appears a little spooky, or unnatural. They demand so much attention that it almost feels like they will pop out of the whites of the eye IMO.

Good morning, Chael

Great photos of your son!

I especially like the play of light and shadow.

Respectfully, I might suggest a slightly tighter
crop to lend more emphasis to your son and less
to the background.

Thanks for the comments. With both my wife and I having green eyes, and most of our family being green as well, we have wondered were he inherited them from. The color from the camera does make them too deep I think. In printing I'll probably try to tone it done to his natural look. I also took the camera to normal saturation and put the setting to AdobeRGB. That should bring it back down a bit.

I tried cropping the top picture a few different ways, but I liked the left edge of green. It does feel too expanisve though. Haven't figured that one out yet, but I'll be palying with it before I print.

And yes, my wife gives him that GQ hair style. I mean hair gel, blow dry, the works!

Michael,
A question...in your first pic of Padon, how did you get the background "blurry" with him so sharp? I am obviously a newbie and not using the correct terminology. My a80 has a setting for "portrait" where it is supposed to do that, but I didn't have much luck with it today. Thanks!

It is depth of field control. Here is a good link:

http://www.photo.net/learn/optics/dofdigital/

Basically, a larger aperture (smaller f-number, like f/2) has a shallow depth of field, anything behind or in front of the main focus point will appear blurred. A smaller aperture (larger f-number, eg. f/11) has a greater depth of field.

Distance plays a roll as well. So for shooting Padon I had him very close to the camera and the house behind was far away, giving even more blurr to the background.

I bet you could also search the forums here and find good decriptions and tips for depth of field.

Thank you for the comments.
