This is my first view and I really like the first shot. Not sure if I like the top of the head cut off that much but I don't really like the second on at all for me. Just my opinion, but artistry is subjective. Sorry you haven't had any more opinions. Some of the more well-rounded photographers may not have had the time to look yet.

Since you ask I like the first quite a bit. Looks like you're maybe bouncing the flash onto the reflector above and down onto the guy which typically results in a pleasing and skin-smoothing light. If you're looking for anything to do differently I would say that if you're not opposed to it maybe clone out the mole on the end of his nose. My eyes went there pretty quickly after his eyes. Some might say that it would not be realistic then but you've already used the light to smooth out his skin so it would not be a stretch to remove a mole.

On the second it looks like a little bit more of a clamshell lighting with light source above and secondary light source (reflector) below as well. I've seen similar crops and I'm not a huge fan of them for whatever reason. Probably because the eye is too close to the edge of the pic. I'm a fan of negative space but I don't like the subject placement here. It's a nice exposure and light that is flattering to the skin.

Great job lighting on a shoestring with one flash!

if its criticism your after youve posted in the wrong place
but seeing as you asked, the first pic i like, i cant see much wrong with it at all. the second one in not so keen on, if there was something just on the right edge like a door jam or a wall i think it would have looked better, at the moment i just see half a photo

I'm not a big fan of BW photography--I always seem to miss thr point of not seeing this in color. Having said that, I like the compositions. Focus on the eyes is good in #1...nice catch light in the eyes.

As for C&C, the highlights look a little blown on my monitor...especially on #1. e.g around the cheek bones...can't see much texure of the skin...unless you planned for it to look that way
