I have to submit a B/W portrait as part of a competition with my local photo club. The shots go away to photographic judges. I cant make my mind up between these two. I want someone to look at these critically and not for the cutesy look that many people go for. I need someone to look at these the way a judge would and help me make up my mind.

Thanks Grant,

this is the original shot, I worked for a bit on the B/W. I was wondering if the light exposure on his arm was a little too bright but I like this shot. I had printed the otherphoto outto go when I started to think about working on this shot:roll:now Im unsure which to go with.

Hi Julie;

I think the first shot is very nice. True, the highlights are a little blown out, but the shot tells a story - it draws you in. Can you fix the highlights? I don't think it's a major problem, but we lose some detail.

I like it.

Regards,

Tom, on Point Pelee, Canada

Hi Julie, its me again !

Yes, I also would go for the first one. The result just depends on the judges' opinion of those mising highlights, which, of course, is unpredictable.

The second is a nice shot, but the first has something about it which lifts it further above the commonplace.

Regards, John

I agree with them all, but whatever the judges say, artistic judgement is highly subjective.It's like doing an exam where there are no right answers. Remember that almost all the world'scurrently acknowledgedbest artists have had their work rubbished at some stage by someone or other.

Your own artistic and technical judgement, especially after all your experience right here in these forums, is every bit as good as everyone else's.

Good luck!
