I saw this elderly woman planting rice by hand in a lone rice field surrounded by new apartment buildings. It illustrates wellthe 'new meets old' scenario that is happening all over Japan.

Another woman working in the countryside. I had to use some digital zoom on this one to avoid getting too much foreground in the shot, so it's not as sharp as I'd like.

Number one does not work for me, the lines are to busy or skewed, sorry.

Number 2 however is awesome, love the smoke on the background and the position of the picker. Really GREAT shot.

I tend to agree with frank about the crowded area atop the woman planting rice but an easy solution wauld be to crop that out. I actually was very taken by her reflection in the rice paddy. Very nice touch.

These little plots of land being used for agricultural purposes are worth small fortunes. If the farmer dies and his heirs do not farm the land the inheritance tax is enormous.

Good work.

I'm afraid I dsagree with both of you fellows. If you were to present the first photo with no explanation, I would not be aware that this rice field is surrounded by buildings. HOWEVER......the reflextion in the water is not only the lady, BUT the building is also reflected.

I suppose to crop or not to crop is a matter of what story yo u want to tell with your photo. Is this a statement of industry and modernization taking over the old ways of Japan, or is it just a nice photo of a lady in a rice feild??
(I can be very deep sometime )

Anyway, I enjoy both shots....they are very interesting.
