Nice attempt, Matthew. I think your background is too busy. If the subject was in better focus and the background were out of focus, it would be better. Cheers!

No doubt, this is a good photo, but I agree with Barry. It would look better to have a shorter Depth of Field.

How about this - a bit of artificial depth of field in PS. I only did a 90 second edit but as most of the background is fairly far away, I don't think blurring the background layer would look artificial. I didn't blur the short post as much and lightened her face a bit. I do like all the colour you captured in the background.
