I took this picture on a weekend vacation trip last week with a Canon A510. Check out the bullet holes in the post! I tried to correct the exposure but it just looks washed out and the colors untrue. Here's the original... Any suggestions or comments?

Good shot. I love the blue colored mountains in the background, too!

Here is my attempt at a tweak. I like the lonely look of your pic ![]() |

The white balance is off and the image needs a contrast boost. You'll need to make adjustments on individual layers to render the full potential of this one.
You'll get more assistance on the editing forum. I've attached a quick crude edit for demonstration. Rodney |

Rodney,
If that is in Southern Arizona the white balance and contrast are actually dead on. Thats how things look around here, low contrast and washed out. |

Rodney, I think you are right about the white balance...it was set to auto. All other pics from that day came out great and I just couldn't figure out why it turned out like this. It was my first time there and maybe it's really dead on.
Rob_strain, this was taken about 20 miles outside of Laramie, WY by the Snowy Mountain Range. It was about 50 degrees or so when I took this shot. |

Here's the link to my other thread from the same morning. I think these came out really well. I used the exact same settings for all shots.

Nowhere on earth is there a consistent white balance. Position of the sun, environment, and atmospheric conditions all play a role in the light temperature. On overcast days as in this image, the kelvin can change drastically in less time than it takes to blink your eye.
How AUTO White Balance works: After taking your properly exposed, over exposed or underexposed digital image, the camera's processor searches the digital file for anything white to determine what light temperature is needed. Here, because the clouds are blown, the camera apparently applied a wb algorithm leaning more toward blue. I tend to like images that are a bit warmer than normal and always exaggerate edits for demonstration on the forum because many participants here have uncalibrated monitors. If your monitor has not been calibrated, I suggest you avoid color correcting images and attempt to get colors as accurate as possible out of camera. I have no doubts that the color is way off in this image. Rodney |
