OK, so I quite like the colours and I got the focus where I wanted, which is to say the eyes of both birds are sharp. The DOF is very shallow but I wanted that.

The real question is how to crop this.

This is how it came from the camera, and I framed it this way through the viewfinder.

But would you crop it after the event? Is there any crop that improves the composition?

I've tried a few and I can find nothing that strikes me as any better than it is now.

How would you crop it, if at all?

I think it looks great as is.

You could take a little off the top and right hand side, but I thinkd that would make the shot to crowded.

Here's something a bit more radical.

The colours are nice, and I think there is some very interesting geometric symmetry in this crop.

But it seems a bit weird and slightly creepy.

I like the colours and the birds's poses. The background is great. It really sets off the colours, no distractions, yet some subtle gradations in tone make it pleasing to the eye. I don't know that this crop improves the shot, but just as Mugmar suggests, wonder if I'd crop a bit. With so much background, it feels as if the camera moved and cut off a bit more of the bodies than you wanted. Cropping some off the top makes it seem a bit more intentional.

Just saw the more radical crop. That would look great on a wall. Enough reality to know what you are looking at, but an abstract feel.

The more radical crop is very cool looking but I think the shallow DOF makes doesnt work with it, as the OOF area in now center stage. It is in context in the original crop and work with that fine.

craig, i really love this shot.. great moment, great exposure and correct DOF... the original is the best posted so far.. here is a slightly tigher view maintaining the aspect ratio somewhat...

i like the how the original is off center, but i also like dustin's crop.....hmmm. i love the close up, but it would be amazing if you had more DoF. you captured the color and detail of these birds beautifully.

It seems to me that each of these crops has its own merit and therefore trade-offs. Peri, great shot and thanks for sharing. Jaki.

Great shot. I thought I would use your pic to also try out a new technique in addition to the recrop. So here is my attempt.
