If you only use the one flash, you can get better results by bouncing the flash off of the ceiling or a light colored wall. You can also try a white handkerchief or some cheese cloth over the flash head to soften the light.
When you say "regular lamps" do you mean house lamps with incandescent bulbs? If you mix flash with that type of lighting, you are going to have some problems getting a good white balance. The shot that you posted of your daughter(?) looks too much in the green and yellow to me. Grant |

Yes, the composition, the posture, are right but the light isharsh light in it. What Grant has adviced will kind of diffuse the light. I have also used translucent layers of paper on the flash it is seems to work.

I have also used translucent layers of paper on the flash but this one is fix looking forward. I do the white balance with a white paper.
Better? |

so you are unable to tilt your flash up for bounce?
bouncing would take away the harsh light on the cheeks and forehead and will illuminate the hair better to make it shine.. if you cannot bounce, it would almost better to use some windowlight and then just use the flash to fill in the shadows.. (set a negative flash exposure comp).. -d |

i would recommend getting a flash that you can bounce.. it really makes for a more natural and appealing shot.. and then get yourself an omni-bounce or a big-bounce, or somekind of bounce add-on as well..
best of luck my friend, d |

Louis, just want to say thanks we all learning from each other. I use a bouncing flash and eliminates the harsh light. If you can lay hands on one, it will be make a lot of difference.
Merry X-mass and Happy New Year. Kind regards. Jaki. |
