Are the vines in front of this sleeping kitty too distracting. I don't mind them, myself, but I'm wondering other people's opinion.

Yeah, I think that, and the fact that the subject is in partial shadow, provides too many distracting elements.

walk left a ways, crop in tight on the face next time.. and play with the composition..
also, needs some sharpening, contrast.. |

Here's the same shot, but zoomed at 300mm...the vines are still there (there's a wall about 5 inches to the left, so I couldn't go any further that way). I'm not skilled enough in PS to remove the leaf in the front of the scene. That's the one sucky thing about some zoos, they don't necessariy provide good angles to take pictures from and this cat stayed in that same place for over 2 hours.
