In hindsight I should have actually taken this pic in RAW but I had limited memory whilst on a short holiday with the family.
I had wanted to get a picture of the moon rise on the ocean, alas cloud cover and the lack of a good vantaged point had me combing the coastline before I came to a small marina. I would appreciate people comments and suggestions in regards to composition and ways of improving this in post production. I have done minimal adjustments thus far (crop, sharpen and run through noise ninja). Thanking everyone in advance. |

its not a bad shot.. i think this one would be better presented in black and white.. as you can see, your camera set the white balance for the moon, which is cooler than the marina lights which are reflecting off the boat, which makes it a weird yellow color.. since there is minimal color in this anyways, you can just convert to mono and have a more appealing image.. also by converting to mono you lose the color noise in the shot, and a little noise in a black and white image isn't that bad, as it looks more like film grain from older fast black n white film.. i think your image is off-kilter a bit too.. its hard to tell, but i think its rotated a bit..

Thanks for your comments Dustin & Aumma45. I was starting to think no-one wanted to hurt my feelings by commenting.:-)
Dustin, I think the boat drift has caused the effect of the pic being off. I had a look at the horizon and it appears level to me. But then again I have never been accused of being a level-headed guy. After reading your comments I have tried B+W and a different crop. I would appreciate your take on this edit. |

i prefer this edit.. the black and white conversion and crop have added to the atmosphere of the shot.. it looks good.. very moody and eery look to it.. nice

The cropped b/w version works very well. The original shot was pretty nice - it was definitely worth working with. You've done some good PP work. The b/w is a very cool atmospheric photo in which the boat really stands out nicely.

Lovely BW photo. If it were mine, I'd crop only the left side a bit so as to get everything off-center.
