The craziest thing of all is that I tired to take photos of the lightening deliberately afterwards and was unsuccessfull.

It was only when I viewed the photo at home on my PC two weeks later that I noticed the lightening.
I can sympathise with you John (on capturing lightning that is!) spent two hours last night trying to do the same thing -long exposure (bit like marriage really).

It's an omen, I tell you :G

I think that maybe a bit more saturation / colour in the foreground is needed, e.g. making the sand and you both stand out a bit more
I agree with this comment John, when I saw the pic yesterday, I added a bit of saturation to see what it looks like, and in my opinion, it is better :-)

Lol PJ. I was on holiday in Malawi. I had a laptop to load photos on to, but it did not have a raw convertor/viewer (wasn't mine), so I had to wait to get home to see the photos. But it took about 3 minutes once I was home to look at the photo.

OK, you're more than totally excused! Especially because of the raw converter reason and the good 3 minute timeslot from "home" to "view"!

Best wishes...

I like this photo a lot. I agree with the judge who awarded the gold rating.

The lightning sets this shot apart from many similar ones that could have been taken.

Unique capture of a beautiful moment in your life.

Thanks everyone who commented.

Looking at the photo again, I agree with the saturation issue. I actually edited this photo with my girlfriend and desaturated the photo and asked her which looked best. We both thought the desaturated one looked best, but I never thought to selectively desaturate.
