This is a new technique I tried out with my A200. Using a #8 ND filter to enable me to use a long exposure (1/2 second or more) I compose the shot with the lens at it's widest angle position (28mm), then while the shutter is open I zoom to 200mm. Comments & suggestions welcome.

That is very cool, it could work very well depending on your subject. For example I think it works much better on the flower than on the cat. I'll have to give this a try!!

Impossible to do with a P&S camera I'm guessing, correct?

unless you push the camera towards the subject during the shot. I use DSLR and right when i press the flash button i zoom in the lens real fast, at the exact time, that way it gives it the effect of a motion blur. you can try with a P&S i guess, report the results back here!

I wonder whether using a P&S would give the kind of rounded effect of the blur eminating from the centre of the shot? Would be interesting to see. I guess it is possible to try with a dslr or zoom, just don't zoom & move into the subject during the shot! I'll give it a try when I have a minute.

That's really nice. I am going to see if I can do that with my Nikon Coolpix 8700. Did you use a tripod?

No tripod, hand held with anti-shake on. I guess a tripod would help though
