i thought i would share this with you to show what can be done with a blue/gold polarizer.. basically its a polarizer with a golden tint to one side of it.. when you turn it, it polarizes on one wavelenth cutting reflections and darkening skys/etc and improving color saturation.. and the other side gives objects a golden glow..
so in this shot at the angle i have it turned, it darkened the blue sky and improved the saturation of the trees.. it simultaneously gave the grass a golden warm feel and warmed up the red in the barn.. keep in mind this was shot in midday bright sunlight, not a cloud in the sky.. which is needless to say, very harsh lighting that does not lend itself well to photographs.. so i would say i worked pretty well.. the effects are more pronounced in my aRGB version, which has a wider color palette, but this is best i could do with web presentation.. let me know what you all think... Looks very good. I read about the blue/gold polarizer from Ken Rockwell's site.
Where did you get one? Cost? Size? Brand name? |

You take what you get, JD. Without the filter the shot might not be available or almost impossible to improve in post processing. Nice shot, Dustin. Do you know if Cokin makes one??

the only company i am aware of that makes this filter is the singh-ray.. it costs about 180USD in 77mm.. other sizes actually aren't that much different in price.. its also available in Cokin "P" mount, still through singh-ray..
this shot would have been impossible to make without this filter.. the lighting was so harsh that it would have left it overly contrasty and bleached out all over with a blown sky.. so for shots like this the filter is worth its cost.. for those using other brands of filters.. a warming polarizer (often called a moose filter) will produce a similar effect (not quite as pronounced)... thanks for the comments all.. dustin |
