Please share the good and bad. Just hoping to learn from all the talent on the board. Thanks!

its composed pretty well. but you used too small of aperture leaving your background still sharp and a bit distracting. try a larger aperure... so in Av, choose something like f3.5 or something instead of f8 or whatever you used...
also this looks heavily compressed? how did you resize and present for web? |

I'm guessing shooting in Av would be much easier than post processing. I may just go back to that park when the weather warms a bit and try again.
I'm still learning about compression and resizing; what do you see that leads you to believe it is heavily compressed? I did use some old Canon software (Zoombrowser) that reduces the size of the photo to make it more suitable for emailing. |

the artifacting in the hair (notice the halo like portions around some of the hairs) and a rather odd looking skin texture, which i can tell is not how it is for real.

I thought I saw the haloing (is that a word?) of the hair at the 12:00 position after you pointed it out, but after looking at the unmodified file, I see the same thing. I think that is just a few fine hairs that broke loose from the curl.
Do you think the skin texture is also an exposure issue? |

I think your exposure is ok. The issues with the look of the image is from your processing. As was mentioned, the image looks heavily compressed. What software are you using. Make sure you don't oversharpen and always save at the highest level of JPEG. For posting on this forum, just resize the pic to 800x600...this will allow the pic to be viewed without scrolling....and adjust the level of jpeg to get under the required size.

I'm using ZoomBrowser. It's some old Canon software. That said, how do I reduce to a specific size?
What I really need is a reference to compressing/saving/etc. Something like jpg 101. Any favorite links? Matt |

this program does a quite nice job and i would prefer it over the older zoombrowser software.. and will tie you over until you are ready to step up to photoshop.. |
