28mm equivalent

saturation 'pushed' 10%

G'day BB

You are very brave asking for a 'brutally honest' review of your image - 10/10 from me for doing so.

As someone outside the US, the location means nothing to me - so I am looking at this site for the first time. What I am seeing is a large rocky promentory surrounded by a river - and as spectacular as it was in the moment, it has little visual appeal 'as is'.

Shooting in the middle of the day always makes it hard to get decent shadows and colours into the scene - but I well realise that [maybe] with the family in the car with you, you can't sit around till late afternoon to get those shadows

You say that you have boosted saturation by 10% - all good so far, but what does a 25% boost look like?

Even without a saturaion boost, have you tried to lower the mid-tones [in Levels] from 1.0 to 0.85? and see what that might do for the image

My other suggestion would be to crop it in half to make a vertical pic, maybe showing the left half only, so that the river snakes its way around the promentory and wanders away into the distance

Hope this helps, Phil

Funny you should ask for a 'left side'. Just so happen to have taken one.

thank you for the critique - it is refreshing to actually receive constructive advice - you are correct, the mid-day light was horrible

If you wanna have some fun then try the "dodge tool) on the water (both photos).

'pop' goes the weasel

color + 10%
mid-tones + (from 50->65)
river contrast + 20
over-sharpen for web

pretty, but still a photo ? or merely a manipulation of a poor image ? or does it matter ?!

Sometimes when this happens it's fun to try some photographic cheating:

as per: A. Adams

May as well cheat 'big time'
de-saturated + 'auto contrast'
:D
Thank you all for the critique and instruction :)
