i can't decide which to go w/ but i'm personally a little more partial to the BW.
let me know what you think of the shot and which version i should go with. i was trying to accomplish the sort of dark personal portrait shot w/ the eyes right in the camera kinda thing, if you guys catch my drift. anyways thanks for anything you have to say/offer! ![]() or...... ![]() -mj- www.pbase.com/mikej86 |

Mike,
Nice shot. I much prefer the black and white version. I like the symmetry and mood. I think in terms of critique, I'd try and clone out the line behind his head - that really distracts. Also, try and bring up the shadows on the right hand side of his face - give it a bit more detail. Best, -Ben |

Definitely the black and white. I'd try to play with levels and curves to recover a bit of the other eye.
And a request...please post concession vender guy.jpg |

im unable to bring back the detail in that side of the face because it was never there to begin with. i was going for the dark dark portrait but i guess i took it too far?

Mike,
I think you can get back more detail in the face. This is a very quick edit, just using 'equalize' in photoshop 7 - and obviously it's washed out, but I was just trying to demonstrate that there is quite a bit more detail in that side of the face than it may first appear. I'm not at home at the moment, so don't have photoshop CS2 handy, but if you have (or anyone else has) CS2, you can use shadow/highlight and it should fix this up pretty nicely. Best, -Ben |

Here's my edit. Tried to keep as much of the original feel of the image as possible but just bring out a little more detail in the face.

I tend to agree. What I see in photoshop and what gets rendered as a jpeg is quite different. I was trying to just get the faint lines of the eye and brow rather than complete detail. I think somewhere between the 2 would be ideal. I like the atmosphere you're going for... Guess that's why Ansel Adams spent so much time perfecting images in the darkroom
