This is my first post under critiques, but I've been lurking here for a while. I'm on information overload and trying way too hard to take a great picture, and my results have been terrible. So yesterday I decided to just have some fun with it - I do better when all I want is to capture something that caught my eye. This is not a great photo, just something fun. I hope you get a bit of a laugh out of it.
So here's my story: I took this roll of film, and used blue felt for a back-drop. Then I used studio lighting to light it, and shot this photo. The riddle is (and it is an easy one) what is wrong with my story and why? |

Lovely, I think Kodak should employ ya as their marketing manager. :G Seriously that is a lovely shot but for that part at the bottom which I think should have been removed. Hope you don't mind my edit. Regards. Jaki

Answer to the riddle : There's no shadow on the supposed felt backdrop whereas there is shadow falling elsewhere.

I agree with Steve on the shadow. I also see the "Sky" diminishing in intensity towards the bottom of the photo. I also see what apperas to be weathering on the roll of film. If this was not taken outdoors then you did a good job indoors.

Did you also notice that the pipe was starting to rust at the top, and the spot light at the bottom?
The answer to the riddle is that the story is completely false - it was in fact taken outdoors, on one of those few incredibly clear West Los Angeles days after a rainstorm, the lighting was the noon sun, and it's not a real roll of film - it's an advertisement in the shape of a roll mounted on the roof of a camera store. The first thing that impressed me when I saw it was just how much it did look like a roll of film, and how blue the sky was, not a normal thing here. |
