Hi all...I have been trying to capture sunrises & sunsets using AV mode & I am struggling with the DOF. I can not seem to get the whole shot in focus. What aperture should I be using & should I use all focus points or just single? Whatpart of thepicshould Ifocus on? I did not want tomiss another shot of a sunset,so tonite I used A-DEP mode & bracketed my exposure. All suggestions & comments appreciated.
Thanks, Kath |

I like it. Maybe a little USM might help.

Nice colours Kath - one thing you might try doing is focusing on the tree line, and then reframe the shot whilst holding that focus. My feeling is that you can get away with a lot more in the sky than you can the horizon, in this sort of shot. I've also found that Shutter priority is a good easy way of producing varying results with sunsets - experiment with varying shutter speeds and you'll be surprised at how often you achieve just the effect you were looking for with minimal fussing. The purist will probably shoot me down on that, but I've found it quite effective!
Also a tri-pod is an absolute must for sunsets, in my opinion. |

Hey kath,I won't comment about the focus u need, but I can't help but wonder how it would look if u used ps to darken the image, and adjust the color balance accordingly with a bit of unsharp mask to create a more sillhoute effect...nice shot~Jules

This shot might be a good candidate for a watercolor effect.

RedRhino, thanks for the link. I'll look into it this week.Jaki, thanks onceagain for your thoughts &encouragement.Syd, I did apply some usm but backed off a little bit cuz it made the sky noisy. Steve, I always shoot with a tripod (get a lot more keepers!!) I will try shooting with different shutter speeds tho. (so much to learn) :?. I am still pretty new to ps& don't know all the cool things youcan do with it yet.....but ifJules or JunixRosewant to try the sillouette or watercolor affect...please do. I'd like to see the affects you are talking about.
Thanks, Kath |
