I took an otherwise cluttered and uninteresting shot and tried to do something creative. I have no training and very little experience with editing, so I wanted to try to learn a little.

I took this shot of my son at the beach. The little girl in the background (a stranger to us) seemed to be looking at him, and he had this pensive look. I thought I would play on that by trying to de-saturate the color, but not all the way to black and white, and pop them out in the original color to focus on their imaginary relationship.

I'm not sure if it works...what do you think? Like I said, I'm just hacking at this, so anything you can tell me to help learn and make it better would be much appreciated!

Here is the edited version (I'd title it "Shy"):

I like it, it does put more emphasis on the two of them.

I agree! It's so much better with the touch up... Very nice photo!

I think edit or not it started as a great shot. The expression is priceless. I actually prefer the colour (although the girl in the background gets slightly lost) but the colour of the blue sky is so nice.

I may be tempted to crop a little of the right hand side though...

Hi,

Sorry took so long been busy lately. I pulled some of the blown areas back a little and cropped. Also boosted contrast and run a sharpening tool oveer it. What do you think now?

i love it. great composition and a very nice concept. i think it would be nicer in b&w than just desaturating the color. but that's just a personal taste. great work!
