I think you had it right the first time. When you lighten it, it looks over exposed, too contrasty. The dark tones, the coase skin texture, and the softness of the kittens create interest and a story - not just another snapshot.

Thanks for your opinions, it has definitely helped. And it has also taught me that I DEFINITELY need to get my monitor calibrated!!!

In the first one, I didn't mind the smudges on his t-shirt. It's real.

In the second one, I also think it was too light. Also, the smudges on the t-shirt were gone (not a criticism; just an observation).

In the third one, I like the color balance better, but now the smudges stand out too much.

Thank you very much, TCav. I, too, like the darker (first) version but somehow, it still didn't look right on my monitor. I think you are right ... it might be the color balance, not the brightness.

If I adjust the brightness or contrast, I seem to shift the color. Sigh ... sometimes I feel like I am just going around in circles! Ria
