I tried a few sunset pictures with my Canon S3 IS, but the results were not satisfactory. I am posting a sample pic above. I did not manage to get the exposure right. It was either too bright or too dark, I could not capture the golden colored sceanery in my camera.

Can any one of you help me with this. Thanks in advance for your time and help.

Cheers,

Mtgoat

Personally I shoot in Av to control the dof and then adjust the exposure with the exposure compensation control. You could also bracket your shots to get an exposure either side of what you believe to be correct which will also help.

I use a more unscientific method for sunsets. I put it in spot metering and meter for different parts of the scene. That not only varies the exposure but also the WB. I take a few. Digital photos are free unless you are on vacation and filling the memory.

In the case of your shot I don't think there is a setting that would have gotten both the boats and sky color. A graduated neutral density filter might have worked for that scene. Or multipleexposures with a tripod and then HDR.

HDR or a graduated ND would have done better, but a quick and dirty PP helped it some.

thanks slipe, spot metering makes sense. the picture does look clearer with your touch.

Other friends, please let me have your inputs as well.
