Ok, since no one else chimed in - here's my .02:

The bird is just too far away. There isn't much detail and the focus is soft. Especially with large birds you really want at least 1/3 - preferably 1/2 the frame filled to have a shot at enough detail (obviously if you can fill the frame that's great) to crop down on. This bird is filling about 10% of the frame so just too little to have enough detail. It's one of the things that makes wildlife shooting so frustrating - where 400 and 500mm lenses can seem too short at times. The exif has been stripped from these so I can't tell what focal length lens you were using. But regardless - that 1/3-1/2 guideline works pretty well for the larger birds.

I know that I need a bigger lens. I have one on order, but I thought I'd give it my best shot with what I have.

This photo was taken with the 70 mm kit lens that came with my A700. The subject was at least 75 yards away from where I was standing.

Here are some more particulars:

F/9

ISO-200

DSLR-A700
