Hi all,

I know that good practice suggests that the horizon line should be flat, but I'd be interested in thoughts on the attached shot (my 3yo at the beach). When I took the shot, my attention was on orienting him vertically; he was standing on a slope, so the horizon is not level. Rotating the image causes him to look perilously close to falling! What thoughts do people have on this?

Cheers,
Paul

Just my opinion, but I don't think he looks like he's close to falling when you rotate the picture to straighten the pier. Especially with his arm outstretched like it is.

Fair call. I could have sworn when I rotated it last time it looked worse than that -- but maybe I'd been enjoying a bottle of red too much before or as I was working

Thanks for your feedback -- level horizon it is

Cheers,
Paul

It's interesting that you mention that - I've seen the same thing. I think I can't possibly straighten some line (vertical or horizon line) because it will throw off the main subject. The funny thing is that probably 8 times out of 10, it looks much better and the main subject isn't as affected as I had thought it would be.

Of course, with such a cutie as your 3 yo, who's going to look at whether he looks tilted or not? It's a nice shot.
