Hi,

We spent Christmas evening with our two children wandering around the grandparents' backyard wielding lanterns -- coloured paper with small candles contained within. A magical time.

My aim was to get a shot of the kids' faces bathed in a coloured glow, ideally with the lantern in shot as well. I'd be interested in comments and suggestions from others more experienced as to how you'd go about shooting in these conditions (we've had requests from both directions of the family tree for a repeat!)

Attached is probably the best shot I got (I'd say I got perhaps a 10% strike rate), using a 350D, with a 50mm MkII at f/1.8, 1/6 second, ISO 1600. Auto-focus was useless at those light levels, so I went manual focus as well. (The fact that he's slightly out of focus does not concern me, given the "soft" nature of the shot.)

Thanks, and happy holiday season to all,
Paul

Additionally, I switched to the Action mode, to see what would happen: ISO 400, f/1.8, 2.5 second exposure for a kinda cool effect...
