I definitely think there should be some discussion with the photos of the day. I certainly think some of them deserve very high praise, while others need to be questioned as to why they were chosen. We could all learn something from each photo.

I also think the POTD should be posted when discussing it. It seems funny to read a post from last week with a comment about a photo not visible.

I think this has to be one of the "coolest" POTD shots i have seen in a long time. There have been many really good shots that may surpass this one quality wise, but content, this is defiantly a good pick.

Have to agree with you pbjunkiee - this is a stunning shot... a so-called "win"

The key to a great photo is being in the right place at the right time. Or in some cases the wrong place at the right time. A big factor that irks me. Which is better, a well planned well executed shot, or an amazing once in a lifetime shot taken quickly without any thinking?

a once in a lifetime moment captured on a cell phone camera is far better than a perfectly executed photo of a rock...

It's flat cause it's not telling a story.
To me photography is a branch of narration and technical achievements are secondary to story telling.

I often like abstracts and they don't tell a story any more than this picture does (which essentially is an abstract). I think this picture is a bit flat because of the processing - at least on my monitor it looks a bit soft (too much compression?). I probably would have lightened the light tones more to bring out more contrast, but there's a delicateness in the existing colors that's pleasing in flowers, and the colors aren't over-saturated (which some people will do to get the colors to pop more).

I've been trying hard recently to be more of a story-teller in my photos, because my natural inclination is more toward abstracts and still lifes. Or at least take a picture for a reason other than the scene was pretty. Both types of photography have their places in the grand scheme of things.
