Default The Puddle Effect

Mother nature has been giving the St. Louis area the combo effect of march winds and april showers. The strong winds were creating ripples in this puddle, plus it did not help facing into the wind. Out of 10 Raw images this one was my second best. The only difference between my best one and this one is the back of the building. This photo is more distorted.

Work flow:

One RAW image converted into 3 TIFFS (+1,0,-1)
Photomatix HDR created settings
strength 90
color saturation 55
luminosity 8
light smoothing high
micro contrast 3
white point 0.333
black point 0.020
temp 0
gamma 1.43

PS adjustments
Curves
Focus Magic setting 3 - Plug in filter
unsharp mask setting 45

Neat image noise reduction

Nice shot and great composition, it makes you look at it to see what is going on in the picture. At first glance I didn't like it until my eye scrolled down and saw the whole picture. The oil at the bottom of the puddle brings it all to life, as it looks like the building is flowing into the puddle and down the street.

i really like this one ancient. an interesting way to present this building and i love the textures of cobblestone, the puddle, the reflection and the swirls of oil. i think they all come together well in presenting this urban vision.

I can't believe it - I wrote an answer last night, saying that I really like this picture and liked it right off, but must not have pushed "post". Oh well, better later than not at all. Very well done.

Thank you for your comment. Shot this scene around 5 months ago as a scouting shot, however there was a dumpster in the way. I was in the area and decided to reshoot the scene. Always have to react fast to puddle scenes. Here today gone tomorrow.

The oil in the water coupled with the gray sky reflection tells a story and makes this picture. Well-composed.
