Default Suggestions Needed

Need some suggestions...lots of colorful sunsets here but last year and this year so far just cant capture them just right. This is the exif on this photo:
D200...1/1000...f5.6...iso400...50mm...Nikon 28-105...center weighted...Aperture Priority...WB-auto
I focused on the sun...half pressed shutter button which I have set to set and hold Exposure only..then moved to the side a bit and pressed to re-focus. In PP I cant get the pop without parts starting to blowout
Is it my PP, the lens(have different lens to use-18-55, 35-70 and longer ones), my shooting technique or combination of the 3. My goal this summer is to try to get this at least half way figured out.
Any suggestions would be appreciated and tried

My guess is: or you use a ND filter (3 or 4 stops) or you go HDR.

Well, this pick is very hard on Martin's AutoHDR. I don't think it will work. Here you need a dedicated HDR software (Photomatix, Dynamic HDR, etc.) and at least 5 picks with different EVs. BTW: nice photo!

Thanks Simple for playing with it.
Thanks Bynx for playing with it and posting. I had come very close to yours using D-Lighting in the PP steps on another version I played with. May play with some more later tonite when get time.

ND filters....I looked at the 3 stop ones....Hoya and Cokin. I have a Cokin holder from way back...but there was a big big difference($75) in price between the two..the Hoya was a screw on one. is it that much better than the Cokin. I been buying Hoya's lately but wondered about the Cokin when I seen it, if it was worth getting....or is there something better than these two.

Thanks

Aren't Cokins plastic?
Of course, for that particular scenery you'll need a graduated ND filter.

Yes they are Ordo...I was going to get the Hoya but thought I would ask about Cokin. Ok on the graduated...will look at them.
Thanks
