Default Death Valley Afternoon - improvements?

Opinions! How can I make this shot even better?

I think maybe darken the clouds a little. Hmm

Well,
I dislike the white halo effect at the edge between mountains and sky, thats why I'd start over to be honest to get rid of that. I think it came from sharpening so maybe go for some detail works, deconvolution, re-focus etc. first without touching the "simple sharpen" button. Retinex filter comes to mind (changes local contrast), maybe try some pseudo HDR for a little(!) color touchup.

You miss out like 5% black and 25% white in the histogram so maybe have a look there. I know, that with the special light situation this might mean nothing, just an idea.

As for the clouds... it's easy to overdo things, always a good idea to be careful there.

Cropping/composition is something I'd do as the last step.

Just my two cents,
Th.
