Default Night Pictures with Pentax K-X

Here are some pictures that I took first time using a tripod with my Pentax K-X.
Location: San Diego Balboa Park
I did not use a flash for the first 2 pictures. There were spot lights pointing at it.

These 2, no flash too. Just set the shutter speed to 30 sec.

I think these would have been good candidates for HDR. The statue shot has blown highlights and the shadows are filled in. The other two shots could have had longer exposures and perhaps a shorter one so when combined you would get detail in the sky as well as keeping the streetlights exposed properly.

When things are spot lighted, I normally stop down or ev down. Also use spot meter to try to over expose the lit area.

Not bad shots for flash at night.

I think that a photo should have all the shades of the spectrum in it from pure white to pure black, the problem with HDR is that it squeezes all shades toward the middle of the spectrum, avoiding pure black and pure white means missing a lot of shades and so looks unnatural to some people

greyscale

and HDR greyscale

I like the shot of the Botanical Gardens. I have been thinking of where I was going to try out night shots and had not thought of Balboa Park. It's one of my favorites for day shots though.
