Everyone has his favorite editing software. My preference is Photoimpact. Photoshop Elements is also well thought of , as is Paint Shop Pro. Some of them have free trials you can download to see if you want to continue using them. There are also a number of free programs, such as Irfanview. Take a look at the Software forums for ideas and links.
A lot of photographers, in the film era, spent as much or more time in the darkroom, tweaking their photos, as taking pictures. With digital, it is less time consuming, and you don't have to deal with all the chemicals.
