Default Truth vignette

This is my first foray into this style of shooting. Please let me know what you think:

A close up of a stone cross that is inscribed with scripture.

Out of focus photography is a style I really dont like at all. I prefer to be able to see the picture. Otherwise Id just walk around without my glasses.

I'm a fan of the style so I'm not really asking whether or not I should do it. Just asking for critiques within the style.

I would also love to ge a tilt lens some day for other types of stylistic focusing methods.

It's not clear to me the message that the selective focus is trying to achieve. For this particular photo, I'd like to see the whole thing in focus. The sliver that's in focus in this pic just doesn't do it for me, it just leaves me confused as to what the significants of the focused part is... not sure if that make sense or not..

I think if you want to highlight the word 'truth' you need to add a lighting effect as well. The focus on its own doesn't do it (in fact not all of the word 'truth' is in focus). The composition feels a bit unbalanced to me as well - I think you needed to move a bit to the left so we don't lose the edge of the cross.

Thanks for the input. Some good things to keep in mind for future efforts.

Also, to me the horizontal symmetry dosen't work quite well.

The focus as it stands highlights the "rut" in "truth" by my lights. I don't know if that's what you intended...
