I had just spent a couple of hours in a beautiful park, shooting new signs of life (baby chicks, spring blossoms, etc.) on a sparkling day. I was about to leave when I saw a young man slowly amble over to a bench and sit down heavily to one side. He seemed unaware of the beauty and life that surrounded him.

I wanted to go over, rest my hand on his shoulder and offer some word of encouragement and hope. But, what could I say? What did I know about his circumstance, his inner thoughts and what had brought him here? I felt, tho, that I needed to record the scene so that I would remember the barrier that existed between us.

C&C appreciated.

I think this works very well in B&W, and evokes the somber mood perfectly. But the thing that undermines the photo for me is the spacing -- the man and goose are too close to the edges, and make the photo feel pulled apart instead of integrated.

I agree with tclune about the sombre mood this photo has captured. The goose being distanced from the young man seems to be exactly how Walter felt.... Just my thoughts.

You are right, banksy, it seemed that he wanted separation.

I feel this is a very meaningful picture and so well interpreted. It couldn't have been more perfect. I would give it a 10!
