In the first shot the leaf is an integral part of the shot. In the second shot its not necessary and more of a distraction. But I love the lighting.

i prefer the first one as well. a little more intimate as its leaning in to the frame. but the background is not completely black, you can easily fix this by burning it until its all an even shade of black.

I like the 1st of the 2 best. I would say that you can crop right up to the edge of the flower, all that black is wasted space and does nothing for the image even if you think it balances the shot it does not. it looks unedited. once the gradation to dark happens your eye stops following the flower down the stem so cut that off too. :-)
