Default Never shoot a band

I knew better, but I let my bride talk me into shooting her band. They are looking for photos to put on their website.

So the photo shoot took place on a stage with great big, multi-colored stage lights. So stand here and a big red light is shining on your face. Lean the other direction and you're in the darkest of shadows. But step one step in another direction and that big red light is now a big yellow light.

And they want to know what the photos look so strange.

Anyway, here's a few of my wife and a friend of hers. Please comment, and you are also allowed to question my sanity.

I'm having problems with the microphone in front of her. I mean, the angle is not favouring a lot.
Sanity..., sanity... i have pale memories about the meaning of that word.

Ordo,

I am with you on the mic in her face.

But with all the amps on stage, they turn the mic gain way down, so she's getting lipstick on the mic, that's how close to it she is.

How do you get around that?

And I'm not arguing with you at all. I am in total agreement with you. I just don't know what to do about it.

A few random comments, starting with the last photo:
The band is really spread out on the stage. Is this how they normally perform? You can't get a shot of the band performing if each of them performs from a different state. Get them together.
If you are going to take promo shots for the band, you should be able to use flash. Stop down your lens to get a decent depth of field when you are trying to shoot more than one band member, and use flash to get the illumination you need.
All the shots of the performers make them look like they're asleep. Perhaps you were constrained by the need to use a slow shutter with no flash. But these shots don't make this group look like performers. Get some life in the performances if you want to "sell" the band on the web page.

Default Spread out????

Tclune:

When you say "spread out" you are kidding!!!

I think they stand so far apart from one another, they have to send smoke signals in order to communicate with one another.

You are also on the money regarding their lack of expression. They don't look joyful at all. They look like someone beat them to get them to go on stage!

Anyway, take a look at this photo, and you have an ever greater appreciation for how far apart they stand.
