normally i would shoot colour, unless in poor light, as the fz100 does not tend to show as much low light noise in black and white.

I guess it's a personal thing, editing to B/W later will still hide the noise and gives colour if you so desire. If you are sure you will only want it in B/W then I would stick with shooting it straight away.

Edit is definately better with the exposure being brought up. I do like softer tones with mono shots, maybe a bit of diffuse or a softer levels balance on the mids could soften the shot a bit more

For now, thats great, you must be a seasoned parent.

Well fortunately for now, she won't complain if you turn on some lights or open some blinds on the window.. That would help
