Thanks for your thoughtful inside and critique. Yes, you're right - if the birds could be a bit more distinguished / separated from the background, they might "stand out" more - giving the photo more 'pop'.

By playing with shadows / highlights, I did manage to get some more separation than there was in the original, but I couldn't get much more -without the background looking different to what I wanted (and unnatural). Maybe people more skilled in post processing could do that... (anyone feel free to try?? I can email you the higher resolution copy).
