Default Confederate Statue at Shiloh, TN

This is a picture of the only confederate statue at Shiloh National Battlefield, in Shiloh, TN. The morning I was there, the light was from behind, but the picture of these two men, one with his head bowed in reverence, just caught my eye. I wish I had been there in the afternoon. Please comment on the picture and how I could have improved it given the conditions.

Aside from the lack of sharpness (maybe an upoad issue ?) depending on your distance from the statue, maybe use a flash to balance out the exposure....?
Meter for the background, focus point on the statue and experiment with flash output.
You may want to shoot this with a wide aperture setting for a shallow DOF also- and if it's too bright (and beyond flash sync speed) use a Neutral Density filter...

Well, the subject is SOFT.
Composition is not great either.
And that background is too distracting!

The overall image just doesn't say anything, IMO it's recycle bin worthy!

Some fill light would have helped a lot. Then again using fill light in this case would not be easy, being that the subject is metal and would act as a mirror. Of course shooting a flash into a mirror is not easy.
