No, you are already doing pretty well. Use the in-camera histogram (post shot), and push it until you come very close to the end of Zone 10. You don't want to overexpose your highlights, but you also want to use as much of the dynamic range of your camera as possible ... otherwise you end up boosting the curve in post processing which amplifies noise.
In reality, you will have to overexpose some to find out where the limit is. You could bracket some important shots too so you don't lose a good catch. I often find that even using the in-camera histogram .. AFTER METERING .. that my post processing histogram is slightly blown. It's just a mater of getting comfortable with your equipment and knowing what it tends to do.

Kalypso,
Thank-you for your welcome! It is my pleasure and I am impressed with the site advancement and format. Rodney Blair rekindled my awareness and I thank him for that.
Your recognition of the value of separating hardware .. and similar product issues .. from image posting is a significant and positive differentiator. I look forward to your comment and guidance.

I gotta agree with Kalypso, Tom. It is good to see you participating here. I've always appreciated the well thought out critiques you deliver. I'm confident we will see WisconsinGirl evolve into a seasoned photographer.

I applaud Steve, Kalypso and JimC for providing us with a forum to help us improve our skills. I've learned alot already!

Rodney
