I tried twice this kind of photo and I know they are not good enough.How can I get the right light?

The composition is very good, butit seems as if there is too much contrast in both of these pictures. This results in lack of visible detail. A secondary light source to soften the shadows might help. I tried adjusting the second picture and came up with this.
