You only "think" your eyes go right to the subject. Our eyes are attracted to contrast(I didn't make it up) so that means that in the first image your eyes linger around the white border. True, the evergreen is interesting and you look to it, but back to the border you go.
You're probably right. I only think I like Vito's shot. I thought the parital outline was very effective. I should have known better. My world is spinning.

I am not a photographer by trade, but I am an artist. And I know you can't reduce any art merely to its technical aspects. The aesthetic ofart is not to be found in its science. In plain fact, many works of art are effective because they defy the rules of their genre. Please accept this as "fact". Now, can we stop the bickering.

To quote Rodney... King that is: "Can't we all just get along?"

My comment is not a rule. A study how our eyes and brain work may be interesting to you.

If you like the first image, that is fine. I like it too, but that does not negate the fact that the white border is a distraction.

I've clearly demonstrated why his presentation isn't as effective as it can be. If you can demonstrate why your preference is most effective, then I certainly welcome you to prove me wrong.

You may have missed that this thread was initiated just for me. :-)
