you have managed to make the flower really stand out, was this done with curves?

The darker DOF makes this flower stand out. Not in an overpowering way either. Yellow can be a bit intense in my opinion.

This works for me.

No curves adjustment here. I didn't do much to this image except for the general stuff that is always required when sizing down for the Internet.
