This is a CYPRIPEDIUM ACAULE. It's protected by law because it's very uncommon in our area, and it's growing on my property. I hope this comes out as sharp as it is on my monitor, but for some reason, photos don't always retain their sharpness for me.

Thanx for looking - comments appreciated.

Geez that's a scary flower. Reminds me of themovie "Body Snatchers". After seeing that "pod", I just know I won't be able to go to sleep tonight. :-)... They got you didn't they.

Did you crop the right ear? Other than that, Nice shot!

:-) I didn't know some plants were protected. That flower is very different looking. How long do the blooms last? Looks like good out of focus on the background. Nice picture.

Lonnie,
Thanx for the comments. To answer your question, I don't know how long the bloom will last. It was fully "open" when I remembered to check, that was Tue. It still looks the same today.

Not sure what state you are from Ron, but here in Minnesota, it's also protected and the state flower. It is actually an orchid, here is a link to some more info including its habitat http://plants.usda.gov/cgi_bin/topic...p;symbol=CYAC3. In the part of the state where I live we often can find the yellow Lady Slipper, a close relative of this one.
