I went for an early morning surf, but the waves just were not cooperating, so I took this shot instead. What do you think

I like the composition of this shot. The way it leads you out to the beacon.

The upper half of the shot looks cool but the railing in the foreground is somewhat distracting.

Thanks for the comments guys. I also found the rail a bit distracting, but the choice I had was between this one, where the wave is actually hitting the font of the pierorone where the rail was further away but there was no wave action. Maybe I should have cropped out some of the rail though.

not much you can do to the rail unless you had a TS-E lens. I really like the action/color/composition in the shot. Well done.

I found the rail a little distracting, too... because it's such a dominant element in the photo. My idea: crop so the rail in the foreground is at the far right edge of the image... that way the rail would still remain in the piece (as I think it must for it to make sense) but would act as a border on the image and would be less distracting. Crop maybe 1/2 of the rail outside the right border.

I really like this pic,but think your idea of a vertical crop would be even better.
