First post to this C&T forum, rip it to shreds. This is my first try at a portrait so I need all the help I can get. Let me know what you really think, you won't hurt my feelings. Thanks in advance.

I have no experience with portraiture, but the two things I notice are that the head is underexposed/too dark and the towel in the shot is very distracting. The camera must have exposed for the towel, leaving the rest of the photo a little dark. Beyond that, I think it's pretty good.

in general your backdrop should match your subject.. so with a light skinned baby wearing yellow, i would pick a backdrop closer in color to this.. white would work too... and watch the distracting elements such as the towel..

Thanks for the ideas guys, I have another edit with a little more contrast that brings the exposure on the face up a bit. I know the towel is bad, but I have very little to work with as far as props go, this was a towel over a body pillow on the dining room table. the BG was originally dark green "marble" texture that I turned black with levels adj. and some burning. I may have to hang a white sheet behind her and try again.
Any suggestions about what to set her on??

Keep away far enoughfrom the backrop so not have to worry about shaddows or DOF. My two-cents worth.

Along with the other suggestions, I would do something different about the white blanket in the foreground. It is a bit distracting. Other than that it looks great.

I dont agree with the other comments. I quite like the first shot. the crop is awful. the baby looks very happy. the towel does not bother me at all.

could not suggest any improvements. when I look at a baby photo, I look for a well captured moment/expression. I think it is important not to clutter the photo.
