I thought this technique worked for these particular flowers. THe full color version felt too busy to me. Other than being a bit oversharpened, any thoughts?

it still seems too busy to me, there doesn't seem to be a particular focal point in this shot.

i agree w. julie.. this is too busy, both versions.. to be honest, i don't think any amount of post-processing is going to help it out.. the problem is that the flower is just too small and not bold enough to compete.. these types of tiny flowers are very difficult to make standout and thus are usually not the #1 choice to photograph..

in the first image I'd try a tighter crop
get rid of the dead wood so to speak

Focus just isn't there. It's not that the composition and subject don't have potential...they do. But somewhere in there you should pick your object and nail that focus or if you want the softer focus then eliminate the blown out areas you see in the part that's most in focus. My humble opinion.
