I have been interested in taking my photos beyond the usual holiday snaps for about a year now

I am starting to experiment with some of the features in Paint Shop Pro and like the combination of B&W with a little colour.

Any views on improvements I could make in this, or techniques I could try?

Picture was taken on a Fuji S5000, which I have now been relieved of by a thief in France.

this is a bit much on the special effects for me.. the pixelation is just too harsh rendering the facial features jagged which are not flattering.. i would recommend toning down the pixelation quite a bit on this one to the point where it looks more like film grain.. i think the pixelation is also magnified by the extreme contrast look you have here.. again, i think this is too much...

as for the colorizing, i really don't think the earings hold enough color, nor are they the correct object to be colored... to me, coloring them adds nothing and only detracts from the subject of the picture, which is the girl.. if the object helps to add emphasis to the main subject, then it can be colored, if it is a bit seperated from the main subject, and thus detracts, then its usually not a good idea to color..

thanks for sharing and look forward to more, -dustin

Shame you missed the top of her head - its a nice photo... not too sure about the hair in front of her face would maybe have tucked that away... maybe slightly over-exposed - not a difficult fix with PS

i agree with Dom on this one.. the cheeks a bit hot and the crop is a little too tight.. you need to be very careful when cutting off parts of bodies...
